Self-Guided Visitor Center Tour — $15

Guided Power Plant Tour — $25 adults, $15 ages 4–16
The one most visitors should take. An elevator descent, a walk through original 1930s construction tunnels, and a viewing platform over a thirty-foot-diameter penstock where you can feel the water moving through the structure. Then eight of the commercial generators in the Nevada powerhouse.
The guided portion runs about thirty minutes; budget two to two and a half hours in total. Bookable online in advance. Quietest between 9 and 11am and again from 2:30pm. Fully accessible. Guided Dam Tour — $40
The deepest access available to the public: the historic tour tunnels, the original 1930s elevator, the inspection tunnels at the core of the dam, and a view down to the Colorado River through a ventilation shaft. It includes everything in the Power Plant Tour.
This is the important part: you cannot book it online. It is sold on-site only, first come first served, and everyone in your group must be physically present at the point of purchase.
Tours take around twenty people at a time and routinely sell out well before midday. If you want it, be at the Visitor Center when it opens at 9am and buy immediately.
Minimum age is effectively 8. No strollers or motorised wheelchairs, and the ventilation shaft is not accessible to manual wheelchairs either. Not recommended if you are claustrophobic — it involves elevators and tunnels.

Key Security Restrictions

The Best Full-Face View, 890 Feet Above the River
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge has a free pedestrian walkway on its upstream side, reached from a free car park on the Nevada side via a switchback ramp and stairs. Free, daylight hours only. It dead-ends on the Arizona side so you walk back the way you came. No shade, and it can be windy.
You Cannot See the Dam While Driving Across the Bridge
The sidewalls are deliberately built high to keep drivers' eyes on the road. If you want the view, you park and walk.

There Is No "Hoover Dam Skywalk"

The Grand Canyon Skywalk

Black Canyon rafting launches from the base of the dam, down a restricted access road with a 1,100-foot drop, and floats twelve miles downstream to Willow Beach.
This is flatwater, not whitewater — suitable for anyone. You pass hot springs, Emerald Cave and Gold Strike Canyon, with a decent chance of bighorn sheep and bald eagles.

It is a concrete arch-gravity dam, holding back the Colorado using both its own weight and the way it curves into the canyon walls. It has 17 generators — see the Lake Mead section for what falling water levels have done to their output. It created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by capacity.
On the deaths. The Bureau of Reclamation's official toll is 96 — industrial accidents on site. Its own project history catalogues 213 deaths between 1921 and 1935 under a broader definition including illness, Boulder City residents and workers who died after being moved off site.
The story most often told is that the first recorded death, surveyor J.G. Tierney in December 1922, and the last, his son Patrick, in December 1935, fell exactly thirteen years apart.
No bodies are buried in the concrete. That is a persistent myth.
On the name. It was planned as Boulder Dam, after Boulder Canyon — though it was actually built in Black Canyon. Designated Hoover Dam in 1930, reverted to Boulder Dam under Roosevelt and Truman, and permanently restored to Hoover Dam by Congress in 1947. What You'll Actually See
This has become part of the visitor experience, and it is worth understanding before you arrive.
Lake Mead is currently matching its all-time record low. Bureau of Reclamation projections put the July 2026 elevation at around 1,040 feet — level with the previous record set in July 2022. The reservoir sits at roughly 27 to 35 per cent of capacity depending on how it is measured, and around 180 feet below full pool.
What that looks like: a stark white bathtub ring of calcium carbonate deposits banding the canyon walls where the water once stood. It is dramatic, and sobering.
What it means for the dam: nameplate capacity is around 2,080 MW, but output has fallen substantially — reported at roughly 1,567 MW after the 2021 shortage declaration and around 1,304 MW by 2025, with annual generation down roughly half since 2000. Should the lake drop to elevation 1,035 feet, twelve of the seventeen older turbines were not designed to operate and would shut down.
None of this closes the dam or the tours. It does mean the visit now carries a visible lesson about the Colorado River that it did not twenty years ago.
Reclamation's forward projections — explicitly labelled as projections — put the most probable elevation near 1,020 feet by July 2027, which would set a new record low.
