The Two Drives at a Glance
Most guides blur the two rims together, which is how people end up planning a "quick drive to the Grand Canyon" that turns into nine hours in the car.
If you have one day and a rental car, drive to the West Rim. If you want the Grand Canyon of the postcards and can spare a night, drive to the South Rim. The North Rim is farther still and closed to cars for much of the year, so most drivers setting out from Las Vegas can ignore it.
| West Rim (Skywalk) | South Rim (National Park) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | ~130 miles | ~280 miles |
| Drive time | 2–2.5 hrs | 4.5 hrs |
| Day trip? | Yes | Overnight better |
| The draw | The Skywalk | The classic canyon |
| Route | US-93 → Pierce Ferry Rd → Diamond Bar Rd | US-93 → I-40 → AZ-64 |
Distances vary by source and by where you start and finish: the West Rim clusters at 122–134 miles and the South Rim at 275–292. The figures above are planning numbers, not precise odometer readings.
Our West Rim vs South Rim guide covers the fuller comparison, and the transport guide summarises every way to reach the West Rim.
The West Rim Route
From the Strip, take I-215 east onto I-11/US-93 south toward Boulder City and the Hoover Dam. The freeway now bypasses Boulder City entirely, and the bypass bridge carries you over the Colorado just downstream of the dam — you no longer drive across the Hoover Dam itself. You will catch a glimpse of it on your right.
Continue into Arizona. About 42 miles past the state line, turn north onto Pierce Ferry Road near Dolan Springs. Follow it about 28 miles through Joshua tree country, then turn right onto Diamond Bar Road, which runs the last 20 miles to the Grand Canyon West Welcome Center.
One navigation quirk: Grand Canyon West has no street address. Enter "Grand Canyon West" or "Grand Canyon West Airport" into your GPS. If your maps try to route you to Peach Springs, they are out of date.
Don't rush past the Joshua Tree Forest on Pierce Ferry Road. It is a dense stand of Mojave Joshua trees with a free pull-out and a short walking loop, and fifteen to thirty minutes there is well spent.
Other Las Vegas Day Experiences You Might Enjoy
The drive out passes within reach of most of southern Nevada's best day trips. Grand Canyon West and the glass Skywalk at Eagle Point sit at the end of the road, the Hoover Dam and its Black Canyon raft trips are on the way, and Boulder City, the Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon and the Seven Magic Mountains are all short detours from the same highway. Browse well-reviewed options below for ideas that fit your route.
The South Rim Route
Take US-93 south the same way, over the bypass bridge, and continue about 70 miles to Kingman. From there you have two choices.
- Fast: stay on I-40 east to Williams, then north on AZ-64.
- Scenic: exit onto historic Route 66 through Hackberry, Peach Springs and Seligman, rejoining I-40 for Williams.
From Williams, take AZ-64 north about 60 miles through Tusayan to the South Entrance. That final stretch is a two-lane road where you will be stuck behind RVs and tour buses, so it drives slower than the interstate.
Total: about 280 miles and 4.5 hours without stops. If you would rather not drive it, coach tours cover the same ground — our bus tours guide has the operators and 2026 pricing.
How Long It Really Takes
The I-11 corridor is fast, but weekends aren't
The freeway out of town moves well, and weekend getaway traffic toward Boulder City is real. An early start avoids it along with the heat and the crowds at the other end.
Visiting the dam costs you a checkpoint
Detour to visit the dam and you pass a security checkpoint that backs up badly in summer. Passing through on the bypass bridge avoids it entirely. Our Hoover Dam guide covers what a proper stop involves.
Two lanes, posted as low as 25 mph
Diamond Bar Road is paved but slow, and cattle wander onto it at dawn and dusk. With a family and stops, a West Rim run is realistically 2.5 to 3 hours each way.
9–10 hours of driving for about 3 at the canyon
That ratio is exactly why an overnight transforms the trip. Our one-day guide has hour-by-hour itineraries for both rims if you are set on doing it in a day.
Stops Worth Making
On the West Rim route
- Hoover Dam / bypass bridge — walk the bridge walkway for the classic dam view
- Boulder City — the Coffee Cup Café, and bighorn sheep grazing at Hemenway Park
- Joshua Tree Forest — free, scenic and quick
- Dolan Springs — your last real services
On the South Rim route
- Kingman — Route 66 hub, and the Powerhouse museum
- Hackberry General Store — a frozen-in-time Route 66 relic
- Seligman — the Route 66 town credited as an inspiration for Pixar's Cars; Delgadillo's Snow Cap Drive-In is the landmark
- Williams — Gateway to the Grand Canyon, home to the Bearizona wildlife park, and the natural overnight base
- Tusayan — the gateway town with the IMAX, 7 miles from the entrance
One correction: the old Bedrock City Flintstones park near Valle closed in 2019 and is now a birds-of-prey attraction. Many older articles still list it.
The Gas Warning That Matters Most
West Rim — this is the route where running low is a real risk
Fill up in Las Vegas or Boulder City, and treat Dolan Springs as your last reliable fuel — there is a Chevron at the US-93 and Pierce Ferry junction. Beyond that there is essentially nothing until Grand Canyon West, which sells fuel only in emergencies. Cell service on Diamond Bar Road runs from limited to nonexistent, so download offline maps and your tickets before you leave pavement.
South Rim — spaced out, but never desperate
Services sit 70 to 100 miles apart, and Kingman, Seligman, Williams and Tusayan all have fuel. Keep the tank half full and you are fine. EV drivers should note that chargers cluster in Kingman, Williams and the park itself.
Roads and Seasons
Diamond Bar Road is fully paved
The last nine-mile dirt stretch was reconstructed and paved in 2014, ending decades of flat tyres and bent oil pans. The old warnings about a rough dirt road needing 4WD are out of date — any standard car is fine. The West Rim sits at lower desert elevation, so snow is rarely an issue, although summer heat regularly tops 100°F.
The South Rim in winter
Williams and the rim sit near 7,000 feet and get real snow and ice from late autumn into spring. The drive is usually fine, but check the forecast, watch for wildlife at dusk, and be ready to change plans in a storm. The rim itself stays open year-round. Our best time to visit guide has the month-by-month detail.
Summer heat is the other seasonal hazard, and it is the one people underestimate on the West Rim route. Carry plenty of water, watch your temperature gauge on long climbs, and never leave people or pets in a parked car.
Renting and Driving
Renting in Las Vegas is easy and, for two or more people, usually cheaper and more flexible than a bus tour. Pick up at the airport for an early start. A standard car is fine for both rims — no high-clearance vehicle is needed.
For international drivers: the US drives on the right, limits are in mph, and a right turn on red is generally allowed after a full stop. Fuel is self-service and usually pre-paid at the pump, but foreign cards without a US ZIP code often fail at the pump, so plan to pay inside. Carry your licence, an International Driving Permit if your licence is not in English, and your passport.
The Arizona time-zone quirk
Arizona does not observe daylight saving. In summer, Arizona and Nevada run on the same clock. In winter, Arizona is an hour ahead of Las Vegas.
That matters more than it sounds. Cross into Arizona in winter and you "lose" an hour, so a West Rim visit that feels early by your Las Vegas watch is later than you think against the last-ticket cutoff. Coming back into Nevada, you gain it again.
Which Rim to Drive To
Day trip → the West Rim
It is the only rim that works as a comfortable same-day round trip. You park free at the Welcome Center and ride the mandatory free shuttle between Eagle Point, where the Skywalk is, and Guano Point, which has the best views — private cars cannot reach the viewpoints. Grand Canyon West opens at 8 a.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. most of the year and 5:30 p.m. in summer, Arizona time. More in our Grand Canyon West guide.
Overnight → the South Rim
It is the real, iconic canyon with far more to see, and the drive demands a night in Tusayan or Williams. You drive in, pay per vehicle, park at the visitor center and use the park's free shuttles from there.
The honest take: first-timers who want the full effect and have two days should choose the South Rim. Anyone with one day, or who specifically wants the Skywalk, should choose the West Rim.
The 2026 Fee Self-Drivers Should Know
From January 2026, non-US residents aged 16 and over pay a $100 per-person surcharge on top of the standard entrance fee at the South Rim national park. Children under 16 are exempt, and a $250 non-resident annual pass covers the holder plus three others.
It does not apply at the West Rim, which is Hualapai tribal land. So a car carrying two non-resident adults pays $35 plus $200 in surcharges at the South Rim — or nothing extra beyond admission at the West Rim.
| South Rim | Grand Canyon West | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard fee | $35 per vehicle (7-day pass, covers both rims) | $67 General Admission or $99 All-Access, per person + tax |
| Skywalk included? | Not available | Only on the $99 All-Access Pass |
| $100 non-resident surcharge | Yes, age 16+ | No |

Vegas: Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Skywalk Option & Two Meals
Covers the same West Rim route this page describes, with somebody else at the wheel for the five hours of desert highway — plus the Hoover Dam photo stop, two sit-down meals in the base price and VIP access that skips the West Rim shuttle queue. For a solo traveller it usually costs less than renting, fuelling and paying admission separately; for a group of four, self-driving still wins on price.
- Grand Canyon West entry + VIP direct bus access
- Sit-down restaurant breakfast + BBQ lunch at Guano Point
- Hotel pickup from 14 Las Vegas hotels
- No driving, no parking, no navigating Diamond Bar Road at dusk

Driving to the Grand Canyon: FAQ
How far is the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas?
It depends which rim. The West Rim, home of the Skywalk, is about 130 miles and 2 to 2.5 hours. The South Rim is about 280 miles and 4.5 hours.
Can you do a day trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon by car?
To the West Rim, comfortably. To the South Rim it is a punishing 9 to 10 hours of driving for about 3 hours at the canyon, and an overnight in Tusayan or Williams is far better.
What's the best route to the West Rim?
US-93 south over the Hoover Dam bypass bridge, then north onto Pierce Ferry Road near Dolan Springs, then right onto Diamond Bar Road for the last 20 miles to the Welcome Center.
Is the road to the Skywalk paved?
Yes, entirely. The last dirt stretch of Diamond Bar Road was reconstructed and paved in 2014, so any standard car is fine. Warnings about needing a 4WD are out of date.
Can you still drive across Hoover Dam?
No. Through traffic uses the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. You can exit to visit the dam itself, but expect a security checkpoint that backs up badly in summer.
Where's the last gas before the West Rim?
Dolan Springs, at the US-93 and Pierce Ferry Road junction. Fill up there — beyond it there is essentially nothing until Grand Canyon West, which sells fuel only in emergencies.
Do I need a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle?
No. Both routes are fully paved and fine in any standard rental car.
How long is the drive to the South Rim?
About 4.5 hours each way without stops, and longer if you take the Route 66 detour through Hackberry, Peach Springs and Seligman.
What are the best stops on the way?
On the West Rim route, the Hoover Dam bypass bridge and the Joshua Tree Forest on Pierce Ferry Road. On the South Rim route, Seligman and Williams, plus Bearizona for families.
Do I have to pay the $100 non-resident fee?
Only if you are a non-US resident aged 16 or over, and only at the South Rim national park. It does not apply at the West Rim, which is Hualapai tribal land.
What time is it at the Grand Canyon?
Arizona time, which does not observe daylight saving. It matches Las Vegas in summer and runs an hour ahead in winter — so watch the clock against the last-ticket cutoff at Grand Canyon West.
